Ancient Greek
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- θρῑνάκη (thrīnákē)
Etymology
[edit]Mostly interpreted as a compound with τρι- (tri-), but the attempts at finding an Indo-European etymology have failed. Furnée compares τρίναξ (trínax, “instrument used in agriculture”), suggesting a Pre-Greek origin, in view of the variation θρι-/τρι- and the typical substrate suffix -ᾰξ.
