Substantivised form of the expression in neuter plural διόδια χρήματα (diódia chrímata) < an adjective διόδιος (diódios) (see Koine Greek διόδιον n (diódion, passage)) by ellipsis of χρήματα n pl (chrímata, money). From Ancient Greek δίοδος (díodos, passage), from διά (diá) in the form of δι- (di-) + ὁδός (hodós) (modern οδός (odós)).
