Etymology
[edit]From an unattested Medieval Greek *γῶπα (*gôpa), from an unattested *βῶπα (*bôpa), an accusative form of Byzantine Greek βῶψ (bôps), βόωψ (bóōps, “small fish (bogue)”), from Ancient Greek βῶξ (bôx), a contracted form of βόαξ (bóax, “bogue fish”).
The "cigarette butt" sense is in reference to the resemblance of cigarette butts to bogues.
