From Byzantine Greek γράνα (grána, “irrigation ditch”), a Slavic loan related to Proto-Slavic *grana (“branch, twig”) and Proto-Slavic *granь (“side, edge”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrān- (“edge, end, tip”). Cognates include Old Church Slavonic грань (granĭ, “side, edge”), dialectal Bulgarian гран (gran)/Bulgarian грана (grana, “twig, small branch”) and Serbo-Croatian грана (“field, branch”).
