Inherited from Ancient Greek ἀποκρίνομαι (apokrínomai, answer question, charges), mediopassive of ἀποκρίνω (apokrínō, set apart; choose). By surface analysis, απο- (de-, from) +‎ κρίνομαι (I am judged, chosen).
