Ελλάς (Ellás) is the former, Katharevousa, word for what in Standard Modern Greek is now called Ελλάδα (Elláda). Greece is formally referred to as the Ελληνική Δημοκρατία (Ellinikí Dimokratía, Hellenic Republic).
