[edit]Borrowed from Bulgarian шатра (šatra) or Serbo-Croatian šatra or Hungarian sátor, from Old Church Slavonic шатьръ (šatĭrŭ), of Bulgar origin. Cognate with Turkish çadır (“umbrella”), Persian چادر (čâdar, “tent, umbrella”), ultimately from Sanskrit छत्त्र (chattra, “shelter”).
