From a variant of Proto-Slavic *žeravъ (crane), from Proto-Indo-European *gerh₂ōws. Cognate with Upper Sorbian žeraw, Polish żuraw, Slovak žeriav, Serbo-Croatian žèrāv, and Russian жура́вль (žurávlʹ).
