From Old Norse þreifa (to touch, feel with the hand; feel for oneself, grope along), from Proto-Germanic *þraibijaną, causative of *þrībaną (to seize, take hold, prosper), from Proto-Indo-European *terp-, *trep- (to satisfy, enjoy). Related to thrive.
