[edit]From Ottoman Turkish چارپنتی (çarpıntı, “a palpitation”)[1] (alternatively; چارپندی (çarpındı)), from Ottoman Turkish چارپنمق (çarpınmaḳ, “to beat arms or legs about, to struggle and knock limbs about”), from Ottoman Turkish چارپمق (çarpmaḳ, “to strike, to knock, to knock against something, to give a shock”), from Proto-Turkic *čap- or *čalp- (“to hit, to steal, to plunder”),[2][3] morphologically çarp- + -ın + -tı.
