[edit]From Ottoman Turkish چوكندی (çökündü, “fallen materials, sediment, deposit”),[1] from Ottoman Turkish چوكونمك (çökünmek, “to kneel or crouch down, for sediment to settle”), from Ottoman Turkish چوكمك (çökmek, “to collapse, to fall down, for sediment to settle or be precipitated”), from Proto-Turkic *čök- (“to kneel, to sit down”),[2] morphologically çök- + -ün + -tü.
