Etymology

[edit]

From Swedish Åbo, the Swedish name for Turku; this is because the Swedish-language university of Turku (Åbo Akademi University) was originally east of the river and the Finnish-language university (University of Turku) on the other side.

Pronunciation

[edit]

Proper noun

[edit]

Åbo (colloquial)

  1. (Turku) The "old" side of Turku located east/south of the River Aura.
Åbo on täl pual jokke ja Turku tois pual jokke.
[Åbo on tällä puolen jokea ja Turku toisella puolen jokea.]
Åbo is 'on this side of the river' and Turku 'on the other side of the river'.
(Despite the literal translation, the expressions for "on this side of the river" and "on the other side of the river" are always the same way around in Turku.)
