Inherited from Middle French bannir, from Old French bannir, banir, from Frankish *bannijan, from Proto-Germanic *bannijaną (to banish), from *bannaz, *banną (ban, curse, order, banishment), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂- (to speak, say). More at ban.
