[edit]Borrowed from Middle Low German tergen, or possibly from Middle High German *zergen, from Old High German zergen (“to irritate, tease, provoke”), from Proto-West Germanic *targijan, from Proto-Germanic *targijaną. Cognate with Dutch tergen and English tarry.
