Etymology

From Persian سنگین (sangin, heavy), possibly via Ottoman Turkish زنگین (zengin). Doublet of səngin.

Irregular /s//z/ can be seen elsewhere, often disguised by conservative Arabic-script orthographies. Compare ziyil, zopa, and zindan (also compare Turkish siğil and sopa to the first two).
