[edit]From Middle High German zogeren (“to tug, pull around”), from an iterative form of Middle High German zogen (“to pull, tear, tug”), from Old High German zogōn, from Proto-West Germanic *togōn (“to tug, pull, tow”), ultimately from the root of ziehen (“to pull”). Cognate with German Low German tögern.
