[edit]From Middle English yolden (“yielded”), from Old English golden, ġegolden (“yielded”), from Proto-Germanic *guldanaz, past participle of Proto-Germanic *geldaną (“to yield, pay”). Cognate with Dutch gegolden, German gegolten, Icelandic goldinn.
