From Old Galician-Portuguese gẽolho, geonllo, gionllo, jeonllo, from Late Latin genuculum, alteration of Latin geniculum, diminutive of genū (knee), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵónu.

Cognate with Portuguese joelho and Spanish hinojo.
