[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *wēˀdera, from Proto-Indo-European *úderos. Compare Lithuanian vė́daras (“sausage; (colloquially) belly, intestines”), Latvian vȩ̂dȩrs (“belly, stomach”), Old Prussian weders (“belly”). Nasalization could hypothetically be influenced by Polish wątroba (“liver”).[1][2]
