From Middle Dutch vlerc, vlederic, from Old Dutch fetherak, from Proto-West Germanic *feþerak (wing), from *feþru (feather). The -l- visible from Middle Dutch onward likely arose through the influence of words such as vlueghel/vloghel (wing), vliegen (to fly), vleder (wing). Cognates include Old High German federah.
