[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ولی نعمت (veli niʿmet, “a benefactor”),[1][2] from Arabic وَلِيّ اَلنِّعْمَة (waliyy an-niʕma), from وَلِيّ (waliyy, “helper, protector, benefactor, patron”) + نِعْمَة (niʕma, “blessing, benefit”), equivalent to veli + nimet.[3]
