Etymology

From Middle Low German wedderwerdich. Cognate of German widerwärtig. First half of compound related to veder-, second half of compound cognate with German -wärtig, Gothic -𐍅𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌸𐍃 (-wairþs), English -ward. Original meaning literally "turned against". Compare vidrig, English witherward, Gothic 𐍅𐌹𐌸𐍂𐌰𐍅𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌸𐍃 (wiþrawairþs) and Norwegian Bokmål viderverdig.
