[edit]Compound of vatten (“water”) + -u- + skräck (“fright”), calque of German Wasserscheu (“fear of water”), ultimately from Ancient Greek ὑδροφοβία (hudrophobía, “hydrophobia”). Likely named after the rabies afflicted's inability to swallow liquid. First attested in 1738[1].
