Etymology

Compound of vatten (water) +‎ -u- +‎ skräck (fright), calque of German Wasserscheu (fear of water), ultimately from Ancient Greek ὑδροφοβία (hudrophobía, hydrophobia). Likely named after the rabies afflicted's inability to swallow liquid. First attested in 1738[1].
