[edit]Etymology
[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]- IPA(key): /ˈʋɑrusˌmie̯sˌpɑlʋelus/, [ˈʋɑ̝rus̠ˌmie̞̯s̠ˌpɑ̝lʋe̞lus̠]
- Rhymes: -ɑlʋelus
- Hyphenation(key): varus‧mies‧palve‧lus
Noun
[edit]varusmiespalvelus
Usage notes
[edit]- Nowadays, when women are also allowed to do their voluntary military service in the Finnish Defence Forces, the term varusmiespalvelus —with the literal meaning "service done by a male conscript"— may be considered sexist by some. Therefore, the term asepalvelus —with the literal meaning "service that involves weapons"— is gender-neutral. However, varusmiespalvelus is very commonly used, and not widely considered sexist.
Declension
[edit]Synonyms
[edit]- (military service): asepalvelus
