[edit]

ase (weapon) +‎ palvelus (service)

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈɑseˣˌpɑlʋelus/, [ˈɑ̝s̠e̞p̚ˌpɑ̝lʋe̞lus̠]
  • Rhymes: -ɑlʋelus
  • Hyphenation(key): ase‧palve‧lus

Noun

[edit]

asepalvelus

  1. Military service.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Nowadays, when women are also allowed to do their voluntary military service in the Finnish Defence Forces, the term varusmiespalvelus —with the literal meaning "service done by a male conscript"— may be considered sexist by some. Therefore, the term asepalvelus —with the literal meaning "service that involves weapons"— is gender-neutral. However, varusmiespalvelus is very commonly used, and not widely considered sexist.
