Etymology

Through metathesis, from Proto-Finnic *varahin, the instructive plural of Proto-Finnic *varas (compare dialectal Finnish varas, Livonian varāz, Veps varaz, Votic varaz), borrowed from Proto-Baltic *vāras (compare Lithuanian võras (old)). Related to Estonian vara, Ingrian varahiin, Karelian varahin, Livonian varāld and Votic varain.
