[edit]Through metathesis, from Proto-Finnic *varahin, the instructive plural of Proto-Finnic *varas (compare dialectal Finnish varas, Livonian varāz, Veps varaz, Votic varaz), borrowed from Proto-Baltic *vāras (compare Lithuanian võras (“old”)). Related to Estonian vara, Ingrian varahiin, Karelian varahin, Livonian varāld and Votic varain.
