Derived from German werben, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *hwerbaną (to turn; to move; to change). Compare Dutch werven (to recruit), English wharve (to turn over), Swedish värva (to recruit), Russian вербова́ть (verbovátʹ, to recruit, enlist), Polish werbować (to recruit, enroll).
