Etymology

From Middle High German vewen, from Old High German fowen, fewen, from Proto-Germanic *fawjaną (to sift). Closely related to Sanskrit पवयति (paváyati, to purify, cleanse), and more distantly to Welsh ir (raw, fresh), Latin pūrus (clear, clean, pure), Persian پاک (pâk, clean, pure).
