While the usage of this adverb is acceptable, a structure using väittää (to allege) as a verb is generally preferred, unless doing so makes the sentence structure significantly more complicated.

Hän on väitetysti rikkonut lakia. → Hänen väitetään rikkoneen lakia.
He has allegedly broken the law. → He is alleged to have broken the law.
