[edit]Unknown. Possibly from an alteration of an earlier *vânced, from a Vulgar Latin root *vincidus, from Latin vincō (“to defeat, conquer”) (compare Italian vincido (“flexible, pliable, foldable, soft; withered”)), or alternatively derived from vinciō (“tie, restrain”).
