Yoruba
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Cognate with Èkìtì Yoruba ùdín, Edo údẹ́n (“palm oil ointment”), Yoruba àdín, Igala ìdí, Igbo ùde (“ointment, palm oil ointment”), Nupe èdín (“palm kernel oil”), Nupe èdĩ, and possibly related to Edo ẹdi (“nut, palm nut”), Urhobo edi, with a much deeper etymology, it is proposed to be derived from a Proto-Niger-Congo root, see Usaghade útén (“oil palm”), Ibibio adan (“oil”), and Proto-Bantu *mʊ̀téndé
