From Old Norse tryggr (true), from Proto-Germanic *triwwiz. Cognate with the Old English trīewe (English true), Old High German triuwi (German trau); Dutch trouw; Danish tryg, Faroese tryggur, Norwegian Bokmål trygg and Swedish trygg.
