From Proto-Germanic *trudaną. Cognate with Old English tredan (English tread), Old Frisian treda, Old Saxon tredan (Low German treden, Old Dutch tredan (Dutch treden), Old High German tretan (German treten), Gothic 𐍄𐍂𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽 (trudan).
