Etymology

Possibly from a Balkan substrate. Usually assumed to be connected with Proto-Slavic *tъrgъ, Lithuanian tur̃gus, Latvian tirgus, Swedish torg (market, marketplace). Compare Romanian târg (market). This group is considered to be cognate with the Italian city name of Trieste, Latin Tergeste.[1]
