Usually assumed to be connected with Proto-Slavic *tъrgъ, Lithuanian tur̃gus, Latvian tirgus, Swedish torg (“market, marketplace”). Ultimately, from a Balkan substrate, compare Romanian târg (“market”), Albanian tregtar (“merchant”).
