Etymology

[edit]

Compound of trafik (traffic) +‎ plats (place). First attested in 1873[1].

Noun

[edit]

trafikplats c

  1. A grade-separated junction (UK), an interchange (US)
    Synonyms: mot, (Finland) planskild anslutning

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Not every road needs to be grade-separated to be called a trafikplats. Technically, it can be classified as either a högklassig trafikplats ("fully grade-separated interchange") and ej högklassig trafikplats ("partially grade-separated interchange"). In a partially grade-separated interchange, some sections may still include at-grade junctions where different carriageways cross each other.
