[edit]Etymology
[edit]Compound of trafik (“traffic”) + plats (“place”). First attested in 1873[1].
Noun
[edit]trafikplats c
- A grade-separated junction (UK), an interchange (US)
- Synonyms: mot, (Finland) planskild anslutning
Usage notes
[edit]- Not every road needs to be grade-separated to be called a trafikplats. Technically, it can be classified as either a högklassig trafikplats ("fully grade-separated interchange") and ej högklassig trafikplats ("partially grade-separated interchange"). In a partially grade-separated interchange, some sections may still include at-grade junctions where different carriageways cross each other.
