   bet tad mēs ieklausāmies: tās trūkdamas skan − gandrīz kā toņdakšas, uzdodot toņus dziesmām! ― but then we listened: they (= flower stems) sounded snapping (= made sounds while snapping) - almost like tuning forks, producing tunes for songs!
