From a Early Medieval Latin or Late Latin tenda, from Vulgar Latin *tendita, substantivized feminine of *tenditus, as a variant form of tentus, perfect passive participle of Latin tendō. Compare Italian tenda, Spanish tienda, Friulian tinde.
