Of Ancient Greek origin. See thio- (“sulfur”).

thionine (countable and uncountable, plural thionines)

1. (chemistry) An artificial red or violet dyestuff consisting of a complex sulfur derivative of certain aromatic diamines.

   Synonym: Lauth's violet

2. (organic chemistry) The unsaturated nine-membered heterocycle having eight carbon atoms, one sulfur atom and four double bonds.
