[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish طارتی (tartı, “weight of an object, anything by which the weight or quality of a thing might be judged, a scale, measure”)[1] (alternatively طارتو (tartu)), from طارتمق (tartmak, “to weigh, to ponder, to estimate deliberately”), from Proto-Turkic *tart- (“to pull, to hang, to weigh on a scale”),[2][3] morphologically tart- + -ı (deverbal nominal suffix).
