From earlier variant talikala, possibly a blend of Sanskrit तनिका (tanikā, cord) +‎ Sanskrit शृङ्खल (śṛṅkhala, chain) or Sanskrit खर (khara, hard). Compare Ilocano talikala, Bikol Central talikala, Cebuano talikala, Waray-Waray talikara, Maranao sarikala. See also Negeri Sembilan Malay tali kala (rope-support for a woman in labour).
