Etymology

[edit]

From Arabic طِين (ṭīn). Some older Gozitan dialects regularly diphthongised /iː/ and /uː/ in the vicinity of emphatic consonants. In tajn, this diphthongisation established itself more widely probably because it prevented homophony with tin (figs), from Arabic تِين (tīn).
