From Old Norse þreskǫldr, þreskjǫldr, þrepskjǫldr, from Proto-Germanic *þreskwaþluz. Related to tærske (to thrash, thresh) in a dated sense "to stamp, stomp, stump". Cognate with Norwegian terskel, treskel, Swedish tröskel.
