[edit]From Proto-Germanic *swerką. Related with Old Frisian swerka, Old English sweorcan (“to become dark, obscured, gloomy”), from Proto-Germanic *swerkaną. Compare especially Old English ġesweorc (“cloud, mist, smoke”).
