[edit]From Old Swedish svælta, from Old Norse svelta, from Proto-Germanic *sweltaną.
Verb

- (intransitive) to starve, to hunger (be the victim of famine or the like)
- (transitive) to let starve, to let hunger (by refusing someone food)
