[edit]Compound of surat izin (“permit”) + mengemudi (“to drive”), literally “driving permit”. First attested in 1965. Compare to Japanese 運転免許証 (untenmenkyoshō, “driver's license”, literally “driving license (permit proof)”) and its Japanese occupation period equivalent Indonesian soerat izin mengemoedikan auto.
