Etymology

From earlier *zukis or *zukas, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *źū́ˀ- allegedly suffixed with *-ka-;[1] ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰǵʰúHs. Cognate with Lithuanian žuvìs, Latvian zivs, Ancient Greek ἰχθύς (ikhthús).[2]
