[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Dutch subiet, subijt (“sudden”), from Middle French subit (“sudden”), from Latin subitus (“sudden”) or subitō (“suddenly”).
Already in early modern Dutch the meaning “immediately” appeared. The dialectal sense shift from “immediately” to “later on” is similar to English dialectal drekly from directly.
