[edit]Inherited from Old Norse styggr, from Proto-Germanic *stugjaz. Cognate with Norwegian Bokmål stygg (“ugly”), Norwegian Nynorsk stygg (“ugly”), Swedish stygg (“bad”), Dutch stug (“stiff”).
