[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

strypa (strangle) +‎ grepp (grip, hold)

Noun

[edit]

strypgrepp n

  1. a grip around someone's neck with the hands (as when strangling), a literal stranglehold
    att ta strypgrepp
to put one's hands around someone's neck
  2. a figurative stranglehold (stifling control)
  3. (professional wrestling) a chokehold

Usage notes

[edit]

SAOB (and the author's intuition) says hands (outside professional wrestling), but likely to be a bit inconsistent. Compare strupgrepp (chokehold).
